Job Description Summary

We are looking for a Lead – Workday Development to play a hands-on technical leadership role in enhancing and evolving AT&T’s established Workday HCM platform. The platform has been in production for the past three years and supports critical HR integrations, workflows, applications, reporting, and automation capabilities across AT&T’s HR ecosystem.

This role combines Individual Contributor and Technical Lead responsibilities. The Lead will actively architect, design, and develop complex Workday solutions while providing technical direction and guidance to the broader development team. The role will be responsible for solution architecture, hands-on development, resolving technical blockers, establishing engineering best practices, conducting design and code reviews, mentoring developers, and driving continuous improvement across the Workday platform.

The ideal candidate is a strong Workday technologist who can operate at both the architecture and implementation levels, taking ownership of complex technical problems from solution design through production implementation and support.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a hands-on Workday developer and Technical Lead, contributing directly to complex development while providing technical direction and guidance to the team.
  • Architect and design end-to-end Workday solutions, translating complex business requirements into scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable technical designs.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support Workday integrations, extensions, and automation solutions across multiple HCM domains.
  • Develop complex solutions using Workday Studio, Workday Extend, Workday Orchestrator, EIB, RaaS, Custom Reports, Workday Web Services, and related technologies.
  • Design and develop API and Web Service-based integrations between Workday and enterprise platforms including Payroll, Recruiting, Benefits, and other internal and external systems.
  • Take direct ownership of complex and critical development activities requiring deep technical expertise and hands-on troubleshooting.
  • Unblock development teams by resolving complex technical challenges, evaluating solution alternatives, and providing clear technical direction.
  • Establish and promote engineering standards, reusable integration patterns, coding standards, design principles, and development best practices.
  • Conduct solution design reviews, code reviews, and technical walkthroughs to ensure consistency, scalability, security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Identify opportunities to modernize and simplify existing Workday solutions, reduce technical debt, improve performance, and increase automation.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues, lead root cause analysis, and implement permanent solutions to improve platform stability and reliability.
  • Define and improve practices around monitoring, error handling, observability, performance optimization, resiliency, and operational support.
  • Partner with functional teams, business analysts, product owners, architects, security teams, and external vendors to deliver end-to-end solutions aligned with business and enterprise architecture requirements.
  • Lead technical activities associated with Workday releases, including impact analysis, regression planning, evaluation of new capabilities, and adoption of relevant platform features.
  • Mentor developers through hands-on guidance, technical coaching, design discussions, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for automation, reusable components, standardization, and improved developer productivity.
  • Provide technical leadership across initiatives while remaining directly accountable for development deliverables as an Individual Contributor.

Key Competencies and Skills

  • 12+ years of overall technology experience, with a minimum of 8+ years of relevant hands-on experience in Workday HCM development, integrations, automation, and solution architecture.

  • Proven ability to architect, design, and develop complex enterprise Workday solutions.
  • Deep hands-on expertise with Workday Studio, EIB, RaaS, Workday Web Services, XSLT/XPath, Workday Orchestrator, and Workday Extend.

  • Experience defining and implementing technical standards, reusable frameworks, design patterns, and development best practices.
  • Ability to evaluate multiple technical approaches and make sound design decisions balancing business requirements, scalability, maintainability, security, performance, and delivery timelines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to independently drive complex technical issues to resolution.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate and document technical designs and decisions.
  • Ability to mentor and influence developers and drive technical decisions without direct reporting authority.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across global engineering, functional, business, and vendor teams.
