Job Description:

This position requires office presence of a minimum of 5 days per week and is only located in the location(s) posted. No relocation is offered.

At AT&T, we empower leaders to drive change in a fast-evolving, connected world. Your technical expertise and strategic vision will help transform our smart home ecosystem and device intelligence platform into secure, scalable, and monetizable API products.

AT&T is seeking a Lead Member of Technical Staff to advance our Smart Home API and Device Insight APIs. In this critical role, you will architect, build, and scale secure, consumption-based APIs that deliver curated, anonymized, and aggregated device telemetry and performance metrics to internal product and marketing teams, as well as external OEMs and third-party partners. Your work will move us beyond basic reporting to real-time, granular insights into device performance and customer behavior—empowering partners to refine device design, enhance end-user experiences, and unlock new revenue opportunities, all while upholding strict privacy and data security standards.

What you’ll do:

  • Architect, develop, and operate Smart Home and Device Insight APIs with high availability, low latency, and versioned lifecycle management.
  • Deliver curated, anonymized, and aggregated telemetry and performance metrics via secure, consumption-based APIs for internal and external consumers.
  • Build real-time and batch data pipelines for device telemetry ingestion and processing (e.g., Kafka/Kinesis, Spark/Flink), enabling near real-time insights and dashboards.
  • Implement privacy-by-design controls, anonymization/aggregation thresholds, encryption, consent/governance enforcement, and secure key management.
  • Integrate API management, rate limiting, quotas, metering, and usage-based billing, enabling reliable partner consumption and monetization.
  • Collaborate with product, marketing, security, legal/privacy, and OEM partners to define requirements, prioritize features, and deliver partner-ready capabilities.
  • Create SDKs, reference implementations, and developer documentation to streamline onboarding for internal teams and external partners.
  • Establish SLOs/SLAs, monitoring, and observability (logs, metrics, tracing) with automated alerting and robust runbooks.
  • Conduct performance/load testing, capacity planning, and cost optimization for large-scale device populations.
  • Drive delivery end-to-end: roadmap, backlog, and release management in an agile environment.

What you’ll need:

  • Experience designing, building, and operating partner-facing APIs (REST/GraphQL/gRPC) at scale, including API gateways and developer portals.
  • Strong software engineering skills in Java, Go, or Python; microservices; containers (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes); CI/CD.
  • Data engineering proficiency with streaming and batch processing, schema evolution (Avro/Protobuf), and time-series/analytics stores.
  • Security expertise: OAuth2/OIDC, mTLS, secrets management, tokenization, data anonymization/aggregation, and encryption in transit/at rest.
  • Solid understanding of networking and device telemetry; familiarity with home gateway/CPE environments and IoT protocols (e.g., TR-069/TR-369 USP, MQTT) is a plus.
  • Experience implementing usage metering, quotas, and consumption-based billing models.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills; ability to execute in a fast-paced environment.

What you’ll bring:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in software engineering, platform/API development, or data engineering (8+ preferred for lead-level impact).
  • Proven track record delivering high-scale APIs and data products that meet strict privacy and security requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with real-time analytics and observability (e.g., OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana).
  • Demonstrated success enabling partner/OEM integrations and launching developer-facing capabilities.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • A product mindset and a passion for building secure, reliable, and monetizable platforms.
