The Platform Engineering team within the Consumer Technology eXperience (CTX) organization delivers reliable, scalable, and high-performance platforms and solutions across omnichannel. The Associate Director of Technology – Customer Data Platform (CDP) will oversee the strategy, architecture, development, and deployment of innovative technology solutions designed to enable marketing teams to deliver highly personalized, data-driven customer experiences. Focused on driving customer engagement and maximizing business impact, this role demands a strategic leader with a robust technical background, extensive expertise in Data Engineering, data pipeline orchestration, and Customer Data Platform (CDP), along with the ability to align technical initiatives seamlessly with marketing objectives and overarching business goals.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing high-performing engineering teams, driving innovation, and delivering scalable solutions that enhance marketing effectiveness and operational efficiency.
What You'll Do:
Strategic Planning and Vision
- Establish organization's Customer Data Platform (CDP) strategy, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.
- Design the CDP architecture to unify customer data from multiple sources (e.g., web, mobile, CRM, transactional systems) into a centralized and actionable platform.
- Translate business requirements into technical deliverables and collaborate with marketing, analytics, and product teams to define use cases that align with strategic goals.
- Partner with analytics and data science teams to enable advanced analytics, machine learning, and real-time data applications.
- Work closely with stakeholders across departments to align strategies, priorities, and goals.
- Provide regular updates to leadership on CDP performance, project progress, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
Team Leadership and Development
- Build, manage, and mentor a team of engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and technical excellence.
- Set clear goals, performance metrics, and development plans for team members, conducting regular performance reviews and feedback sessions.
- Recruit and retain top talent to scale the team as the organization grows.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as data science, analytics, marketing, product, and IT to align engineering efforts with business needs.
- Promote cross-functional collaboration to ensure alignment on data strategies and priorities.
- Lead by example, supporting team members in resolving technical and operational challenges.
- Create individual development plans to help team members grow professionally.
Technical Implementation and Execution
- Define and implement the architecture for the Customer Data Platform (CDP), ensuring scalability, reliability, and security while unifying customer data from multiple sources (e.g., web, mobile, CRM, transactional systems) into a centralized platform.
- Oversee the design and optimization of scalable ETL/ELT workflows to ingest, clean, transform, and store structured and unstructured data from diverse sources, ensuring efficient and reliable data processing.
- Integrate the CDP with Identity Graph to create unified and actionable customer profiles, and external tools such as marketing automation platforms, analytics tools, and CRM systems to enable data activation across channels (e.g., email, web personalization, advertising platforms).
- Leverage cloud services (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP), modern tools for data storage, processing, and analytics to ensure the performance, reliability, and scalability of the data infrastructure.
- Drive the adoption of modern data architectures (e.g., data mesh, microservices, or serverless) and implement containerized and serverless solutions (e.g., Kubernetes, Lambda).
- Establish and enforce data governance best practices, ensuring compliance with data privacy regulations such as GDPR, and CCPA.
- Implement data security measures, including encryption, access controls, and monitoring, to protect sensitive customer data.
- Define and enforce best practices for data validation, cleaning, and transformation to maintain high-quality customer data.
- Provide actionable insights through reporting on CDP performance, highlighting achievements, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Define and manage Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for production systems to ensure 24x7 support.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
- Drive automation and efficiency in data workflows, reducing processing times, improving scalability, and lowering costs.
- Continuously evaluate and adopt new technologies to enhance platform capabilities and maintain a competitive edge.
- Experiment with tools like machine learning for predictive analytics and AI for automated customer segmentation.
- Promote a culture of learning within the team, encouraging experimentation with new methodologies and technologies.
What You'll Bring:
Experience and Background
- 12+ years of experience in technology organizations, including 4+ years leading and scaling Data Engineering teams to deliver high-performance data solutions.
- 8+ years of expertise in architecting and building large-scale Data Platforms, leveraging Data Warehouses, Data Lakes, ETL/ELT pipelines, and Data Analytics workflows to support business intelligence at scale across public and private cloud environments.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in developing Customer Data Platforms (CDPs) and deep understanding of identity resolution, customer profile unification to enable Marketing Technology (MarTech) ecosystems and personalized customer experiences.
- Demonstrated ability to shape technical vision, design robust data architectures, and implement scalable solutions using modern data frameworks and tools.
- Proficient in delivering end-to-end solutions, from conceptualization and production deployment to ongoing operational support.

- Demonstrated exceptional leadership and team-building abilities, with a proven track record of managing high-performing engineering teams and overseeing other managers.

Technical Skills and Proficiency
- Expertise in designing and implementing scalable data architectures, including data warehouses, data lakes, and data meshes, built on strong data engineering principles and best practices for high-performance systems.
- Extensive experience in ETL/ELT workflows for real-time and batch data ingestion, leveraging tools such as Apache Airflow, Talend, and Informatica.
- Proficient in utilizing cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, and Data Cloud solutions like Snowflake for scalable data processing, storage, and analytics.
- Hands-on experience with distributed systems and big data technologies such as Apache Spark, Kafka, and Flink, combined with advanced programming skills in Python, SQL, Java, and expertise in SQL/NoSQL databases.
- Deep understanding of Customer Data Platforms (CDPs), including identity resolution and customer profile unification, with experience in tools like Adobe CDP, Segment, and Salesforce CDP. Skilled in integrating CDPs with third-party tools using APIs.
- Strong familiarity with data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) and proven experience in implementing role-based access controls, encryption, and monitoring for sensitive data protection.
- Expertise in DevOps practices, containerization (e.g., Docker), and CI/CD pipelines for automating and optimizing data workflows.
- Experienced in implementing business intelligence systems to streamline KPI reporting, improve data visualization, and enable real-time decision-making.
Our Assoc Director-Technology II, earns between $174,100-$261,100 USD Annual Not to mention all the other amazing rewards that working at AT&T offers. Individual starting salary within this range may depend on geography, experience, expertise, and education/training.
