Associate Director, AI/Data Engineering

AT&T’s Chief Data Office (CDO) is harnessing data and making AT&T’s data assets and ground-breaking AI functionality accessible to employees across the firm. CDO also maintains academic and tech partnerships to cultivate the next generation of experts in statistics and machine learning, statistical computing, data visualization, text mining, time series modelling, data stream and database management, data quality and anomaly detection, data privacy, and more. 

We are looking for an accomplished and visionary professional for the role of Associate Director, AI/Data Engineering to join our team and lead the development of cutting-edge software solutions. As a key technical leader, you will leverage your expertise in full-stack development, DevOps best practices, and application-side shell scripting to architect scalable, reliable, and efficient systems. 

This role demands a strategic thinker and hands-on contributor who can work across multiple teams, drive innovation, and ensure technical excellence. You will be instrumental in shaping the technical roadmap, mentoring teams, and delivering transformative solutions that align with business objectives. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Technical Leadership:

  • Define and drive the technical vision and architecture for scalable, resilient, and secure full-stack applications. 
  • Lead end-to-end software development projects from concept to deployment and maintenance. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions. 
  • Serve as a mentor and technical advisor to engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence. 

Full-Stack Development: 

  • Design and implement scalable and high-performance web applications using modern front-end and back-end frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Node.js, Python, Java). 
  • Develop modular and reusable APIs (RESTful or GraphQL) with an emphasis on maintainability and performance. 
  • Ensure seamless integration of front-end and back-end systems while maintaining best practices for UI/UX design. 
  • Optimize database structures and queries for both relational (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and non-relational (e.g., MongoDB, DynamoDB) databases. 

DevOps and Automation:

  • Architect and implement CI/CD pipelines to streamline build, test, and deployment processes. 
  • Ensure seamless deployment and scalability of applications through containerization tools (e.g., Docker) and orchestration platforms (e.g., Kubernetes). 
  • Leverage infrastructure-as-code solutions (e.g., Terraform, Ansible) to automate infrastructure provisioning and management. 
  • Monitor application performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure high availability through tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or New Relic. 

Shell Scripting and Automation:

  • Develop and maintain shell scripts to automate routine tasks, system monitoring, and application deployments. 
  • Debug and troubleshoot production issues using scripting techniques to ensure minimal downtime. 
  • Enhance system efficiency by automating log analysis, error detection, and reporting. 

Strategic Contribution:

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to align technical priorities with business goals. 
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and tools to recommend and implement solutions that advance the organization’s technical capabilities. 
  • Establish and enforce software engineering best practices, ensuring robust security, scalability, and maintainability. 

Qualifications: 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. A Ph.D. is a plus. 

Experience: 

  • 13+ years of experience in software engineering, including hands-on experience with full-stack development and DevOps practices. 
  • Proven track record of delivering large-scale, high-impact software solutions in a leadership capacity. 

Technical Expertise: 

  • Advanced proficiency in front-end frameworks (React, Angular, or Vue.js) and back-end technologies (Node.js, Python, Java, Go, etc.). 
  • Strong experience with DevOps tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes). 
  • Deep understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), including architecture and deployment strategies. 
  • Solid grasp of database technologies (SQL and NoSQL) and optimization techniques. 
  • Proficiency in writing, debugging, and maintaining shell scripts for automation and system monitoring. 
  • Strong knowledge of microservices architecture, API gateways, and distributed systems. 

Soft Skills: 

  • Exceptional problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities. 
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to inspire and guide teams. 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders. 
  • Strategic mindset, capable of balancing technical depth with business impact. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with serverless computing frameworks (e.g., AWS Lambda). 
  • Certifications in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure DevOps Engineer Expert). 
  • Knowledge of security best practices in software development and DevOps.
