With hundreds of UX designers across AT&T, it takes the leadership abilities and experience of someone like Andrea Sutton – VP of Design and UX for our Digital Experience Group – to bring ideas together.
Small Team, Big Picture
We may be a large company, but our design team often works in small groups. This offers the feel of something personal for Andrea – almost like a start-up – with projects that can reach millions of users. With AI, Machine Learning, and other upcoming technologies, her team can also access tools that can’t be found anywhere else.

Kristin Jackson – Sr. Lead UX Designer and Architect
Starting as a contractor over three years ago, Kristin Jackson rose through the ranks by tackling every opportunity she could. As a member of Andrea’s team, she and her colleagues use Design Thinking to shape future experiences for AT&T products and services. No two projects are the same, ranging from outlining new exercises for a security team boot camp to streamlining a sales tool to help automate manual tasks for clients. For Kristin, the driving force lies in inspiring partners and peers to think in new ways.
Design is infectious; in the right dose, it has the ability to change a culture.
Kristin’s favorite project so far? The Personal Learning Experience platform – a service our people use to learn new skills and abilities as part of our continuous learning efforts. Kristin worked with developers of the program – as well as the users themselves – to find common pain points and needs. With the gathered data, her team crafted new, dynamic features that offered a more personalized experience.

Where one might see a mess of sticky notes, markers, and gadgets, Kristin sees the gears of creativity and progress turning. Everyone has the ability to be creative, and the culture is constantly changing on their terms. Different opportunities for growth, like nanodegrees, stand-alone courses, and certifications, also mean that designers can take their careers in new, exciting directions.
My journey at AT&T has been great, and I look forward to my future here – not only within the design community, but also with the company.
Kurt Joseph – Senior Lead UX Researcher
Designers, engineers, business managers and data scientists all work with Kurt to understand user needs. For one of his past projects, Kurt and his team collected hundreds of observations from ride-alongs with field technicians. From this data, he built a customer journey map that outlined new tool design concepts to better support their work activities. Customer maps are just one of the tools in Kurt’s toolbox – lab studies, surveys, usability testing, and quantitative analysis are a taste of the diversity in his work.
I really like working with diverse project teams to solve difficult business issues and provide great experiences for users.
Why Kurt Loves Working Here
Sometimes you need a place where you can freely collaborate with your teammates. Other times, you need to put your head down and dig into a challenging project. For Kurt, it’s all about having the choice to do what suits him best. With the variety of tasks and people he works with, there’s no such thing as a typical day.
The open and collaborative space is a good fit for the work I do and it strikes the right balance for me.
Miranda Bradley – Front-End Developer
When she’s not trying something new in a hackathon, Miranda Bradley works on conversational interfaces and natural language processing for chatbots. As one of our Front-End Developers, Miranda is responsible for concepting and programming the look and feel of our designs. What is natural language processing? VacationBot, a past project of Miranda’s, is just one example. As a chatbot with a broad range of natural language interactions, VacationBot helps automate requests from users to make scheduling a Miami vacation that much easier.
I love the challenges and creativity that go along with working on such a new means of interaction.
Working with a team that is as well-rounded as it is specialized, some of her favorite days include brainstorms with colleagues on a new, challenging problem. And when there’s a challenge outside of meetings? She talks it through with the llama on her desk.
Hackathons – Extra Credit
Hackathons are an opportunity for developers to expand their skills. Miranda and her team won first place in two hackathons, building products that focused on improving the TV viewing experience. Her first app took voice commands – adjusting lights, sending event invites, and ordering pizza, among others – allowing users to customize their personal viewing experience around a movie or show.
The second hackathon led to an app that focused more on active listening – grabbing captions from TV shows and quizzing viewers on certain words at the end of each episode. With different skill levels, the quiz offered different difficulties and tracked the progress of users looking to expand their vocabulary.
